We’re Lost In Music’s 2022 in Review

For us, 2022 has been a bit of a strange year in the world of live music and events…our passion is still there, but it feels like something has shifted in the industry and gigs and festivals seem to be prioritising the wrong things (namely, money over experience). We appreciate the challenges the industry has faced over the last few years, and continues to face with the economy as it is, however we have been to far too many gigs (and even festivals – Glastonbury we’re looking at you) this year that appear to have been oversold, where it’s difficult to move around, where generally it doesn’t feel that enjoyable to be there. It was only a matter of time before this led to a dangerous situation and unfortunately we closed the year on a postponed gig due to Brixton Academy’s licence being under review following the terrible incident in December.

We hope that 2023 sees some of the light and joy return to the gig and festival experience for us but, after years of seeing so many incredible artists, acts and music live, we’re likely to be taking a more considered approach to the events we attend, possibly only attending those gigs or festivals where we’re confident of the quality of the show and our surroundings.

That’s not to say 2022 hasn’t brought us a lot of very happy memories though. See for yourself in our 2022 highlights!

We’re Lost In Music’s 2021 in Review

Despite the first half of the year continuing to see gigs and events postponed or cancelled, the second half has been wonderful. Our world has been filled once more with live performances and music-enhanced experiences. Our hearts have been full.

Wednesday 14th July 2021 saw us return to our first gig since before the pandemic. It had been 493 lonnnnngggggg days since we last saw Jack Garratt perform in the eartH theatre hall…and when we saw him step onto the stage at Hackney Church, tears brimmed. It was a magical evening and so fitting that it was delivered by Jack – he was our last gig, and now our first.

Next up was ‘Freedom Day’ and c. 500 people crammed into sweaty PowerHaus to watch White Lies perform. It was almost like nothing had happened and we hadn’t spent months being prevented from doing just that. More gigs followed, as did the return of festivals and, other than a Covid Pass here or there, our gig calendar returned to something more familiar. We could not be more grateful.

And so, our 2021 highlights feature a lot more live-music than last year! See for yourself…

We’re Lost In Music’s 2020 in Review

What is usually one of our favourite activities to complete has been something we’ve been putting off…it’s a bit heartbreaking to look back at a year of events that didn’t happen 😭

Now we’ve done it, those gigs we were lucky enough to attend in the first few months feel almost a lifetime ago. A memory that will forever remain with us is sitting in the haunting theatre hall of eartH in Dalston waiting to see Jack Garratt showcase his new album after time away. It was just days before the reality of the pandemic hit but, looking back, the signs were already there that everything was about to change.

While 2020 has been difficult for everyone for a multitude of different reasons, it was really tough having such a huge part of our lives disappear overnight. Be it the gigs, the festivals, the venues, the first times, the repeat occasions, the new discoveries, the favourites – each new cancellation or postponement announcement disappoints as much as the first did.

We’ve moved from a world of in-person experiences to watching events play out online – while it has been incredible to see so many artists and promoters embrace digital, we are counting down the days until we can be back in a sweaty room or field, surrounded by all the other people starved of their live music fix this year, united in our love for music. With so little support given to the industry, please do whatever you can to play your part in helping save our scene 🙏🏻

Until then, here are our 2020 highlights…

Hello!

Can you believe 2017 is over already?! We can’t. Perhaps it’s a sign of us getting older but the years seem to whiz by and, before we know it, it’s time for us to recap on our year of music once more. So, here goes…

Just where is this year going?!

You don’t have to tell us that we have been very behind in updating the blog of late – life seems to be a bit of a blur with so much going on!

Don’t worry though, it doesn’t mean that we’ve been neglecting our love of music – in fact it’s quite the opposite, which we realised this week while pouring over all our photographs from the many gigs and festivals we’ve been to over the last few months.

You can treat yourself to a selection of our best shots over on our Flickr page or just take a peak below for some of our fave moments…

One of the things that made us sad in 2016 was that we didn’t go to enough festivals. This must change this year! We’ve already been lucky enough to secure Glastonbury tickets (thanks to friend of the blog Dave) but we definitely need to add to the festival tally.

Here, we weigh up the contenders most likely to make it onto our 2017 festival calendar…

We’re Lost In Music’s 2016 in Review

Hello!

In a year where we have lost so many greats, one thing is clear: while personal tastes and beliefs may differ, there is one consistent factor that unites us all – music.

Let us all be thankful for the impact and contributions of those figures who have made musical history – David Bowie, Glenn Frey, George Martin, Prince, Leonard Cohen, Rick Parfitt, George Michael, to name just some of those lost this year – and hope that there are no more announcements in the few days before the year is out. These figures have shaped music as we know it today and who knows who, if anyone, will go on to make equal or greater impacts.

While we may not have seen the next David Bowie (not suggesting there could ever be a ‘next’) perform live this year, this does not mean we have not witnessed some tremendous talent. Here is the summary of our 2016 in music…

Jack Garratt – definitely not just a Phase

Jack Garratt

Under The Bridge, London (18th April 2016)

We feel like we arrived a bit late to the Jack Garratt party – hearing a lot of hype about Jack we booked tickets for his November gig at Eventim Apollo and, having done that, thought we better give him a listen when his debut album, Phase, was released in February of this year…

And what an album it turned out to be! We’ve been pretty much unable to stop listening to it ever since and have been desperate to see him play in a small venue as we’d heard good things about his live performances. Last night it happened – we managed to get tickets to see him play at Under The Bridge, a 500 capacity venue in West London. We were totally blown away!

Sunset Sons

KOKO and The Mason’s Arms, London (6th and 7th April 2016)

We first came across Sunset Sons last summer when we spotted them doing an interview at Boardmasters festival – at the time we had no idea who they were (to be completely honest, Kate basically spotted a guy with a beard, which turned out to be Rory…) We did however see them play the main stage the following day and realised we already knew and loved She Wants. The rest is history and we’ve been big fans of the boys ever since.

Panic! At The Disco – Our (not so) guilty secret

Panic! At The Disco

Brixton Academy, London (12th January 2016)

Did we tell you about our guilty secret? No? Well, here’s the secret…we don’t feel guilty about it. It’s just pure fact – we cannot get enough of Panic! At The Disco!

They don’t tour very often in the UK but you can guarantee that, when they do, you will find us in the crowd throwing ourselves around like crazies and singing our hearts out. Last week was no different. Even better, the gig was at one of our favourite haunts – Brixton Academy.
