We’re Lost In Music’s 2019 in Review

Cooeeee!

It’s that time again, where we get to reminisce about all the amazing musical experiences we’ve had throughout the year.

2019 really was a corker too, as you will see…

Despite us having to pull out of some gigs (and having some gigs cancelled on us), we’ve managed to see our annual tally increase. This has seen us take in gigs from a myriad of artists and venues and, although we’ve maintained our staple acts that we’ve seen time and time again (you’ll spot a trend in our highlights…), we feel we’ve diversified a lot this year.

We ventured further afield to new festivals (Sziget) and countries (Denmark) and were impressed by the experience provided – from organisation, to logistics, to atmosphere – they really know how to get it right. Hopefully we’ll continue with the theme of We’re Lost In Music on tour next year.

As for this year’s playlist, it was so much fun to compile. Again we’ve taken a track from each artist we’ve seen (or multiple if we’ve seen them more than once) – turns out we’ve seen a lot of acts! You can check it out here:

Why not peruse our 2019 highlights while you listen?

Our favourite moments:

Now this was a tough one – whittling it down to just 5 favourites when there were so many this year was not an easy feat…

Frank_Carter

  1. Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes Village Underground, London – 07/05/19 (a long-awaited gig at such a special venue)
  2. IDLES with support from LIFE Electric Ballroom, London – 05/04/19 (a double whammy of our faves)
  3. Sam Fender Electric Brixton, London – 28/02/19 (this, just this)
  4. Reading Festival – Richfield Avenue, Reading – 25/08/19 (we always love heading back to Reading, but this year was definitely up there!)
  5. Sunset Sons – Electric Brixton, London – 28/11/19 (same favourites, new album)

And the most disappointing – The Hunna at Brixton Academy (we only lasted three tracks, and even that was a stretch!)

Our favourite live acts:

  1. The Murder CapitalThe_Murder_Capital
  2. IDLES
  3. Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes
  4. LIFE
  5. Sunset Sons
  6. Maribou State
  7. Sam Fender
  8. Metronomy

We couldn’t leave it at just 5 😬

Our favourite new acts (the ones we’ve just discovered):

  1. The Murder Capital (introduced to us by friend of the blog Alex)The_Murder_Capital
  2. YONAKA (seen at Heaven and Neighbourhood Festival)
  3. Vistas (discovered on Spotify and then supported Fatherson)
  4. Walt Disco (introduced by Spotify and rocked it at Neighbourhood Festival)
  5. Egyptian Blue (supported The Murder Capital and played at Neighbourhood Festival)

Bring on 2020!

This year we’ve taken out our favourite DJs as we haven’t been to as many electronic music events – perhaps because we haven’t been listening to as much of that genre 🤔

Our favourite venues:

  1. TusksVillage Underground, London
  2. DR Koncerthuset, Copenhagen
  3. Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club, London
  4. Alexandra Palace, London
  5. Gorilla, Manchester

Our least favourite venues this year were the biggest ones (The O2, SSE Wembley Arena) as they consistently provided the worst experience. Brixton Academy also really let themselves down in terms of poor security processes.

Our favourite albums:

  1. Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes – End of Suffering (released 3rd May)End_of_suffering
  2. Sunset Sons – Blood Rush Déjà Vu (released 1st November)
  3. Temples Hot Motion (released 27th September)
  4. Sam Fender – Hypersonic Missiles (released 13th September)
  5. The Murder Capital – When I Have Fears (released 16th August)
  6. Metronomy – Metronomy Forever (released 13th September)

There have been some really great releases this year that have seen us go back to listening to albums on repeat!

Our year in numbers:

  • Number of gigs – 53 (continuing to creep up…despite Kate taking a 5 week break while she travelled in Malaysia, Indonesia and Australia)
February, surprisingly, was our busiest month with 11 gigs (including one week with 5 in 6 days), while we only had 1 in August!
  • Festivals – (almost double last year, and what we were mainly doing in August while there were no gigs)
  • Number of bands we hadn’t seen before – 48 (crazy levels of newness!)
  • Times we ventured further afield than the UK – 3 (including one fruitless trip to Germany where we discovered the gig had been rescheduled after we arrived…we’re looking at you Panic! and Ticketmaster)
  • Act we saw the most – this is a 7(!) way tie between Sam Fender, LIFE, White Lies, IDLES, Metronomy, Maribou State and Frank Carter and The Rattlesnakes
  • Number of venues – 38 (including 11 new venues for us this year)
  • Number of geographical locations – 6
  • Number of countries visited – 3 (including that fruitless trip to Germany…)
  • Number of flights taken – 6 (Germany is in there again)
  • Number of trains taken –
  • And Spotify says Kate discovered 606 new artists, listened to a whopping 30,248 minutes of music (including 27 hours listening to Frank Carter and The Rattlesnakes!!) by artists from 39 countries

So, that’s it for 2019 – it’s been a pretty good one don’t you think? We’ve already started populating the 2020 calendar with lots of excitement, including Glastonbury‘s 50th Anniversary (we got tickets 😃!!) and Beat Hotel in Marrakech.
