We’re Lost In Music’s 2017 in Review

Hello!

Can you believe 2017 is over already?! We can’t. Perhaps it’s a sign of us getting older but the years seem to whiz by and, before we know it, it’s time for us to recap on our year of music once more. So, here goes…

One thing has really stood out for us this year – the amount of new talent we have come across and grown to love in such a short space of time. We always enjoy discovering new acts, usually as warm ups to some of our favourite artists and bands, but this year we’ve had some additional help: Spotify and festivals dedicated to showcasing emerging talent (Neighbourhood and OnBlackheath to name some of those we hit up).

Kate was a real Spotify-cynic until earlier this year. Preferring to buy and own her music, she was reluctant to break and sign up to the monthly subscription…but with a bit of encouragement, she did it in the end and hasn’t really looked back. It’s helped us compile playlists of bands playing at some of our festivals and has changed the way we decide who we should see (as yet we’re undecided if we prefer this method of selecting our line ups…but it definitely led to an exceptional Neighbourhood for us this year!)

In the spirit of our new-found Spotify love, we’ve made a playlist summarising our year in music. We hope you like it!

While you listen to our run down, why not check out our 2017 highlights…

Our favourite moments:

It feels like we haven’t done as much this year but it was even harder to choose our faves so we’ve had to extend the list…

  1. Glass_Animals_Glastonbury_FestivalGlass Animals at Glastobury Festival – Worthy Farm, Pilton – 22-25/06/17 (people riding inflatable pineapples, the best set of friends and an incredible amount of fun)
  2. Citadel Festival – Victoria Park, London – 16/07/17 (an all round fabulous day out)
  3. Neighbourhood Festival – Various venues, Manchester – 07/10/17 (seeing so many acts we had just discovered)
  4. The XX Brixton Academy, London – 09/03/17 (goose bumps all round)
  5. SoulwaxElectric Brixton, London – 08/04/17 (seeing an act you’ve loved for so many years with an electric atmosphere…even if some of the crowd were complete idiots)
  6. Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes – Brixton Academy, London – 08/12/17 (really did just make Kate unbelievably happy that night)
  7. Metronomy – Brixton Academy, London – 19/05/17 (try and keep the smiles off our faces…and our feet still)
  8. Fenech Soler Patterns, Brighton – 24/02/17 (despite the venue cutting them off mid-set!)

And our worst – Lollapalooza Paris (unfortunately terribly organised and it felt like we spent most of the weekend in a queue)

Our favourite live acts:

  1. Glass AnimalsGlass_Animals_Brixton_Academy
  2. Metronomy
  3. The XX
  4. Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes
  5. Fenech Soler
  6. Everything Everything

There were so many acts we could name here and we have a feeling the list will be very different next year.

Our favourite DJs:

  1. ArtworkArts_Haunted_House_Electric_Brixton
  2. Horse Meat Disco
  3. Helena Hauff
  4. Bicep
  5. 2ManyDJs
  6. Jackmaster (unfortunately we haven’t seen him live this year but his social media antics have kept us more than entertained!)

We’re looking forward to Artwork hosting his own festival next year!

Our favourite new acts (the ones we’ve just discovered):

  1. Parcels (discovered at Citadel Festival)Parcels_Roundhouse
  2. Alvvays (related artist on Spotify)
  3. Methyl Ethyl (Spotify Discover Weekly playlist)
  4. Estrons (on the line up for Neighbourhood Festival)
  5. Black Honey (another related artist on Spotify and then on the line up for Neighbourhood Festival)
  6. The Districts (recommended by friend of the blog Alex)

We actually have a list the length of our arm here but we had to whittle it down…

Our favourite venues:

  1. Alexandra Palace, LondonAlexandra_Palace
  2. Village Underground, London
  3. Brixton Academy, London
  4. The Deaf Institute, Manchester
  5. Roundhouse, London
  6. Gorilla, Manchester

Our least favourite is always going to be Shepherd’s Bush Empire (when we haven’t been to Wembley Arena!).

Our favourite albums:

  1. Bonobo – Migration (released 13th January)Bonobo_Citadel_Festival
  2. Sampha – Process (released 3rd February)
  3. Alvvays – Antisocialites (released 6th September)
  4. Wolf Alice – Visions Of A Life (released 29th September)
  5. London Grammar – Truth Is A Beautiful Thing (released 8th June)
  6. Everything Everything – A Fever Dream (released 16th August)

Can’t think of any we’ve been really disappointed with.

Our year in numbers:

  • Number of gigs – 45 (what is happening to us?!)
(June was our busiest month with 7 gigs and 3 festivals!)
  • Festivals – 8
  • Times we ventured further afield than the UK – 1 (but it was just Kate, no Wendy)
  • Act we saw the most – Soulwax, Metronomy and The Districts (3 times each!)
  • Number of venues – 35
  • Number of geographical locations – 5
  • Number of countries visited – 3
  • Number of flights taken – 2
  • Number of trains taken – 9 (including a broken down train on the way to Leeds Festival)
  • Number of headbands made – 3
  • And Spotify says Kate listened to 15,559 minutes of music, 1,221 different songs and 629 different artists across 30 genres (all in 5 months)!

So, that’s it, 2017 is done! The 2018 calendar is already filling up and we will be making our first blog trip to Malta for AMP Lost & Found Festival. Let’s hope we get lots more booked in and improve on those numbers for next year! You can stay tuned on our 2018 musical fun and adventures over on our Upcoming Events calendar page.
