The Magician presents Magic Tape 50

Ace Hotel, London (23rd February 2015)

We’ve done quite well not to write solely about The Magician since we started the blog. We did say that he would become a familiar name to you when we got started but sadly we have not seen much of him in London recently so we haven’t been able to rave about him as much as we would like.

The Magician_Ace HotelThat all changed last night when we were given the very special opportunity to be at the recording of Magic Tape 50 for MixmagTV. What you may ask is Magic Tape 50? Well, the Magic Tape series has been a selection of mixtapes that The Magician has recorded and made available for download through SoundCloud (until SoundCloud changed the rules, but it’s still possible to download via Mega).

Last night was quite the milestone as we reached Magic Tape 50!

Skream residency, XOYO, London (14th February 2015)

This Saturday, while all the couples were out canoodling and doing other such couple-related things, we were doing the only thing appropriate for Valentine’s Day – we were dancing the night away to the infectious sounds of disco as Skream was joined in the main room by two of the biggest names of the genre: Horse Meat Disco and Dimitri from Paris.

Here are our top tracks from the night (many of which I’m sure will be familiar to many of you)…

There is no doubt in our mind that Oliver Jones nailed the first night of his three month stint at one of our favourite haunts. From the moment we walked through the door we knew we were in for a treat – in fact, as the man himself said on Twitter today:

It was certainly the busiest we’ve ever seen the club that early in the night – quite possibly ever!!

As we continue to try and pull ourselves together, here are our top tracks from the night (taken from both rooms)…

We’re Lost In Music’s 2014 in Review

Hi everyone!

As 2014 draws to a close, it seems apt that we take a look back at what the year has had to offer.

Ten Walls

XOYO, London (28th November)

Last week saw (friend of the blog) Catriona and I looking to relive some memories by going to see Ten Walls play a live set at XOYO London. Revisiting the moment the crowd carried out a sit down during Walking With Elephants at Unknown never fails to make me go a bit tingly (I love that I got to be part of that!), but was he going to live up to the memories back in the confines of a club venue in the UK? I would say he did, but in different ways.

Marijus Adomaitis had kept his identity secret for much of the early months of his new project under pseudonym Ten Walls. Although his secret is now out, his ever expanding army of fans will likely know him only as the latter and his brand continues to grow based on this. Armed with his soundboard and accompanying visuals, he had the audience captivated from the moment he hit the stage.

If it’s a musical performance you’re after, Theo Parrish is your man

Theo Parrish – All Night Long

Plan B, London (11th October)

What do you know about Theo Parrish? Do you know that, originally born in Washington DC, he now splits his time between Detroit and London? That he’s partial to wearing a flat cap or two? Or that he sometimes leans back so far while mixing that he’s almost sitting on the floor?!

Or do you know nothing about him at all? Well, it doesn’t matter really – all you need to know is that a set from Theo is something you should try to experience at least once.

WAREHOUSE PROJECT

Store Street, Manchester (27th September)

Featuring: Jackmaster, Leon Vynehall, Carl Craig, Tale Of Us, Seth Troxler, Harri & Domenic, Ben UFO, Pearson Sound

This weekend saw me return to Manchester for the opening night of Warehouse Project 2014. I was flying solo for this event as Wendy is currently soaking up the sun in Italy – not completely solo, of course, as Catriona was happy to step in to help me sample what WHP14 had to offer.

Having called Victoria Warehouse ‘home’ for the past couple of years, this year saw WHP return to its spiritual home, Store Street, for the period 27/09/14-01/01/15. A car park and old air raid shelter, the location under the railway arches of Piccadilly station offers the perfect site for an event of this type and scale and the organisers chose to return here in advance of next year’s major milestone – WHP’s 10th anniversary.

Featuring: John Talabot, Jamie XX, Eats Everything, Jungle, Ten Walls, Mano le Tough, Simian Mobile Disco, The 2 Bears, Waze & Odyssey, Disclosure, Last Waltz, Jackmaster

Thursday was the day of our Island Party and we were looking forward to seeing John Talabot and Jamie XX back to back. We optimistically (or perhaps pessimistically by this stage) looked out of the apartment window to be greeted by…torrential rain. Oh dear. It looked like the Island Party was unlikely, but, having not yet heard from those infamous mouths, we made our way down to the meeting point to find out whether it would be going ahead. With confirmation that is had indeed been cancelled, we were told that some of the artists from the cancelled Island and Boat Parties would be playing on the pool terrace during the afternoon – that was our plan sorted then! To our delight, one of those artists was Eats Everything! One of our highlights from Ibiza this season, Eats never fails to play for the crowd and always has a cheeky grin on his face. We couldn’t resist a photo opp…and of course a dance!

Tuesday. Time for our boat party! We set off to find Entrance B to hop on our shuttle to the port, an easy task you would assume from looking on the map…except no, it was not possible to get to Entrance B by any normal means and it reached the stage where we thought we were going to be trapped in the site forever!! Overly dramatic? Perhaps, but it was a bit of an ordeal getting to that stupid entrance whenever we needed to. Once at the port, we made our way onto the boat to start the party.

We arrived at Zagreb airport bright and early (and very weary) with a mere 4.5(!) hour wait until our transfer 😦 Perhaps the transfer will arrive early we thought, perhaps we can camp out on the coach we thought…but no, that would be far too logical, instead our coach had been told to arrive 15 mins after the scheduled departure time, in case people were late (strange, given the coach was basically scheduled to cater for people coming in on the same flight, all of which had arrived nearly an hour earlier).

Anyway, after what seemed like the longest of journeys, we finally arrived in Rovinj, or, more importantly, at Entrance A! We jumped through the various check-in hoops and found ourselves in our home for the week – the onsite 3* Amarin apartments! We should have taken a picture as this was definitely the cleanest and most pleasant the apartment was going to look for the rest of our time there…

Day 2: 6th September, 2014

Featured: Kindness, Coely, Editors, Jazzanova, Chase & Status

Onto day two and the first full day of the festival. Again we explored the surrounding areas, soaking up the chilled out vibes. Berlin Festival 2014_KindnessThe first act we wanted to see was Kindness and boy are we glad that we did. What a performer! This man likes to move, and with his long flowing locks and sharp style, you can guarantee he should not be missed. With a great supporting band and two sassy backing singers, Kindness (a.k.a. Adam Bainbridge)  glided around the stage and was absolutely mesmerising.

First stop…

BERLIN FESTIVAL

Arena Berlin  (5th-7th September, 2014)

Day 1: 5th September

Featured: Austra, Todd Terje

Having been to Berlin last year, we were excited to see what this year had in store for us.  Previously held at the old Templehof airport, the festival offers a laid back, friendly vibe, full of opportunity to discover both new music and enjoy artists you already know in a different setting.  We were disappointed to find out (a mere month before!) that the festival had moved to be held solely at Arena Berlin (only the evening event was hosted at this venue in 2013).  However, the Berlin spirit lived on and the new setting was mostly a success, if a little hot when stuck indoors during the lovely weather.
