SBTRKT

Brixton Academy, London (2nd October)
With support from Raury and Denai Moore

What can I tell you about my history with SBTRKT? Well, I’ve loved SBTRKT (pronounced ‘subtract’) from the first time I heard Sampha‘s velvety vocals on Trials of the Past. In fact, I used to think that Sampha was very much part of the set up and he is often synonymous with the music for me – many early live shows heavily featured the solo artist – however this is not the case.

So who or what is SBTRKT? It is London-based producer, Aaron Jerome. Preferring to remain anonymous, you are probably more likely to recognise Jerome as the man behind the mask.

Thursday was the day of our Island Party and we were looking forward to seeing John Talabot and Jamie XX back to back. We optimistically (or perhaps pessimistically by this stage) looked out of the apartment window to be greeted by…torrential rain. Oh dear. It looked like the Island Party was unlikely, but, having not yet heard from those infamous mouths, we made our way down to the meeting point to find out whether it would be going ahead. With confirmation that is had indeed been cancelled, we were told that some of the artists from the cancelled Island and Boat Parties would be playing on the pool terrace during the afternoon – that was our plan sorted then! To our delight, one of those artists was Eats Everything! One of our highlights from Ibiza this season, Eats never fails to play for the crowd and always has a cheeky grin on his face. We couldn’t resist a photo opp…and of course a dance!

Tuesday. Time for our boat party! We set off to find Entrance B to hop on our shuttle to the port, an easy task you would assume from looking on the map…except no, it was not possible to get to Entrance B by any normal means and it reached the stage where we thought we were going to be trapped in the site forever!! Overly dramatic? Perhaps, but it was a bit of an ordeal getting to that stupid entrance whenever we needed to. Once at the port, we made our way onto the boat to start the party.

BERLIN FESTIVAL

Arena Berlin  (5th-7th September, 2014)

Day 2: 6th September, 2014

Featured: Kindness, Coely, Editors, Jazzanova, Chase & Status

Onto day two and the first full day of the festival. Again we explored the surrounding areas, soaking up the chilled out vibes. Berlin Festival 2014_KindnessThe first act we wanted to see was Kindness and boy are we glad that we did. What a performer! This man likes to move, and with his long flowing locks and sharp style, you can guarantee he should not be missed. With a great supporting band and two sassy backing singers, Kindness (a.k.a. Adam Bainbridge)  glided around the stage and was absolutely mesmerising.

Never known for doing things by half, we decided to go all out and combine two festivals in one trip.

First stop…

BERLIN FESTIVAL

Arena Berlin  (5th-7th September, 2014)

Day 1: 5th September

Featured: Austra, Todd Terje

Having been to Berlin last year, we were excited to see what this year had in store for us.  Previously held at the old Templehof airport, the festival offers a laid back, friendly vibe, full of opportunity to discover both new music and enjoy artists you already know in a different setting.  We were disappointed to find out (a mere month before!) that the festival had moved to be held solely at Arena Berlin (only the evening event was hosted at this venue in 2013).  However, the Berlin spirit lived on and the new setting was mostly a success, if a little hot when stuck indoors during the lovely weather.
