Under The Bridge, London (18th April 2016)
We feel like we arrived a bit late to the Jack Garratt party – hearing a lot of hype about Jack we booked tickets for his November gig at Eventim Apollo and, having done that, thought we better give him a listen when his debut album, Phase, was released in February of this year…
And what an album it turned out to be! We’ve been pretty much unable to stop listening to it ever since and have been desperate to see him play in a small venue as we’d heard good things about his live performances. Last night it happened – we managed to get tickets to see him play at Under The Bridge, a 500 capacity venue in West London. We were totally blown away!
Jack is a one man band in every sense: keyboards, drums, guitars, synths – you name it, Jack’s playing it! And he doesn’t do things by halves either – we felt exhausted just watching him put every ounce of energy and passion into every single note he played. This didn’t stop him joking and engaging with the audience though; it felt a little bit like we were watching him play to a few mates in his front room (although some of them had travelled all the way from Buckinghamshire…)
If you check out Jack’s social media, you can see some of this character and personality shining through. We love the montages he has been putting together following the gigs on his tour – very clever!
There was one track Kate particularly couldn’t wait to see last night and that was Weathered. Her unofficial wedding song (not that she’s married, or that is planned anytime soon…), it really didn’t disappoint.
We do have to take a moment to give credit to such a great venue. Under The Bridge is a unique space, below Stamford Bridge football ground, perfectly suited to a gig like this. It was such a novelty to be able to get close to the stage without being entangled in a scrum of people, dodging the drinks being swilled. In fact, the whole venue offers a good vantage point and the acoustics were spot on too.
We couldn’t be more happy to have been part of last night and we can’t stress enough how much you NEED to see Jack play live (be it in his front room, a small venue, in a field or in a stadium). There are plenty of opportunities over the coming months so we don’t want to hear any excuses: get those tickets booked!
