Panic! At The Disco – Our (not so) guilty secret

Panic! At The Disco

Brixton Academy, London (12th January 2016)

Did we tell you about our guilty secret? No? Well, here’s the secret…we don’t feel guilty about it. It’s just pure fact – we cannot get enough of Panic! At The Disco!

They don’t tour very often in the UK but you can guarantee that, when they do, you will find us in the crowd throwing ourselves around like crazies and singing our hearts out. Last week was no different. Even better, the gig was at one of our favourite haunts – Brixton Academy.

Panic! have held a special place in our hearts ever since their first album, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, was discovered in a mailbox (a house warming gift) some many years ago (11 to be precise). Their music has taken us on a rollercoaster journey ever since, including one album we can’t bring ourselves to love (well, liking it is a stretch if we’re honest – yes, Pretty Odd, we’re talking about you), and another three we love almost as much as the first.

Having started out as a Blink-182 cover band with four members, only Brendon Urie exists from the original line up and it is Urie who is undoubtedly the one that has underpinned the musical journey the band has taken us on, growing in confidence as the years have passed. If you are ever lucky enough to see the band in person, just wait until you hear Urie’s vocals in a live setting…

Seriously – that last note!!

In a week where we lost a music legend (David Bowie) it was inevitable that any bands or artists playing would be making a tribute, and Panic! were no different. Choosing to donate the merch proceeds from the evening to Cancer Research, we were also treated to Urie’s own rendition of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, which he finished with Bowie’s  Oh You Pretty Things:

With fans both old and new in the crowd, it was great to see that Panic! have well and truly lasted the test of time – their younger fans sang every single note of the new album, Death of a Bachelor, while us old timers were more at home with the older material. The one thing that united us all was clear – Panic! are our not so guilty secret!

We’re already desperate to see them again and we really hope they come back soon. But, in the meantime, we’ll console ourselves by listening to new album (on repeat). After all, we can’t have all the new fans showing us up…
