Shepherd’s Bush Empire, London (10th March 2015)
Who are Glass Animals?
Glass Animals are British indie rock four-piece Dave Bayley, Drew MacFarlane, Edmund Irwin-Singer and Joe Seaward.
Having made a good first impression in 2014, the boys have been tipped for success in 2015…
If you could only use one word to describe their performance, what would it be?
Surprising.
How so?
Well, when you listen to their album, Zaba, you get a relaxed, chilled-out vibe which we fully expected to see translated in their performance. The stage setting also alluded to this with a rain forest feel, coupled with lots of neon lighting.
We quickly came to realise that this certainly wasn’t the case as the boys burst on stage, full of energy and enthusiasm, mixed with a bit of crazy.
Bayley was desperate to get out into the crowd and spent a good portion of at least three tracks getting down and sweaty with the young things at the front!
The whole performance exuded eccentric charm and left us wanting more.
I think we would file Glass Animals under the ‘better live than recorded’ section of our music collection: not because we don’t like their recorded material, but because what they brought to the stage took them to the next level.
Now you’ve made me jealous. How can I see this for myself?
You can try to get to one of their gigs (although good luck with that as many of their dates are sold out). They have a handful of locations left to play in the UK before hitting up Europe and the US. Oh, and of course they’ll be featuring on the festival circuit this year – it would be criminal to leave them off the line up!
OK, so how do I prepare for a day/night with Glass Animals?
Give Zaba a listen. We had it on loop for a couple of days prior to the gig and it takes a while before you feel like you have to throw a bit of Taylor Swift (joke!) in the mix.
Alternatively, you could buy a ticket on a whim and leave the experience to chance…
Either way, we guarantee you won’t be disappointed!
What’s your favourite track?
That has to be Gooey: 1) because it has to be one of the best titles for a track, and 2) because last night it looked something like this –
What else should I know?
Bayley studied neuroscience. Intelligent and musically gifted? That’s definitely a win!
