100 Club, London (7th March 2015)
Who are The Thirst?
The Thirst are Brixton-based foursome Mensah Hart (vocals and guitar), Kwame Hart (bass guitar), Mark Lenihan (guitar) and Marcus Harris (drums). If you hadn’t guessed, Mensah and Kwame are brothers.
How did you first come across them?
Completely by chance (although I guess you come across most new discoveries that way)! I was running errands in Brixton and heard a guitar riff that made my head turn…it was these boys playing in front of the iconic David Bowie mural opposite the Underground station. I bought their CD there and then and tickets for their gig at 100 Club as soon as I got home.
How would you describe their style? Their musical style that is…
I’m glad you clarified as they have style in abundance: both in a musical and a fashion sense.
Musically, they are a mix of funk, soul and rock – not just any mix though, the perfect mix!
So you saw them at 100 Club then?
I did – last night. I’m so pleased I stumbled across them when I did as I really enjoyed the (sold out) gig and it was such a great setting to see them in. The club has a rich musical history and has seen a plethora of big names play intimate shows there including The Rolling Stones, Oasis and Kings of Leon to name but a few.
The crowd was full of an obviously loyal and dedicated following and the band played with confidence and finesse from the outset.
Great! When are they playing next?
Unfortunately the boys don’t have any more local dates lined up (you can check out their tour schedule here) but we’ve got a clip from last night to give you a taster for what you can look forward to if you are lucky enough to see them live:
OK, so if there’s no way for me to see them live what should I do?
Give them a listen! They have a self titled LP, released 2007, and an album On the Brink, released 2008, that you could try. Oooh and it’s rumoured they have a new album due for release this year (date TBC).
One of my personal faves is their debut single Ready to Move:
What else should I know?
There’s hair. Lots of hair. Three afros (of various sizes) and an ample set of dreads to be precise 🙂
