KOKO, London (13th February 2015)
With support from Oscar and the Wolf
How did I not know about OK Go sooner?
That’s a good question; the boys (Damian Kulash, Tim Nordwind, Andy Ross and Dan Konopka) have been together for the last 17 years! Sometimes though a good thing goes unnoticed until you stumble across it unaware.
So what did you find?
Formed in Midwest America (Chicago to be precise), the boys have experimented with various sounds throughout their career but are largely described as an alternative rock band – something which is evident when you consider they have toured with the likes of Kaiser Chiefs to the Music to Panic! At The Disco in the past.
I’m up to speed now. Have you seen them live?
Yes! On Friday, at KOKO in Camden, London. Unfortunately, unless you live in Japan or the US, you’ve missed them on this latest tour (remaining dates here).
What did I miss?
Confetti. Lots of confetti. In fact, there may have been enough confetti to cater for a year’s worth of weddings – white, yellow, blue, red, orange… If anything, it proved there is such a thing as too much confetti!
You also missed Q&As, with Kulash offering the audience more than one chance to get their questions answered (but instead being met with a number of ‘demands’ including a request to play one of their earliest tracks that Kulash highlighted they wouldn’t even know how to play anymore).
Oooh and there was an opportunity for everyone to contribute to one of the songs being performed as Kulash recorded stamping and hissing from the crowd and then sang over this.
So it was good then?
It was a great gig: the band are overflowing with musical expertise and are certainly a crowd pleaser.
If anything, I found it a bit difficult to stay engaged as their back catalogue is so diverse that sometimes it’s hard to keep track of what sound and tempo they are going to choose next (remember this is coming from someone who was not already a fan).
Which of their sound experiments would you recommend?
The boys have released 4 albums during their time together. Their most recent album, Hungry Ghosts, is out now and is as good a place as any to start.
What else should I know?
In the spirit of it being awards season…the boys have been nominated for numerous awards for their quirky music videos and won a Grammy for Best Short Form Music Video for Here It Goes Again in 2007.
Having watched this I now realise I knew them all along! “Oh, here it goes, here it goes, here it goes again…”
