Heaven, London (12th February 2015)
With support from Model Aeroplanes
This last week has seen us discover two great new acts (Model Aeroplanes and Oscar and the Wolf) as they performed as support for two of the headliners we originally went to see. Prides were an act we discovered in the same way; supporting Foxes at KOKO back in May 2014.
Hailing from Glasgow, the trio are fairly new to the scene having only formed in 2013. The boys have quickly built their own following and have since featured on the likes of Radio 1’s Playlist and even Made In Chelsea‘s music list (Seeds You Sow featured on Series 6, Episode 11 – make of that as you will…) As a result, they were easily able to fill Heaven’s 1,800 capacity on Thursday evening.
Stewart Brock (lead vocals, keyboards), Callum Wiseman (guitar, vocals) and Lewis Gardner (drummer) specialise in synthpop and their shows are full of bright strobes and throbbing beats.
Confident performers, the boys even have their own signature style – Brock and Wiseman play with arm bent behind their back while Gardner drums with one arm and drumstick stretched above him. Check out their performance on the BBC Introducing stage at Reading Festival 2014 to see this in action.
Thursday night was no different. The boys delivered their set effortlessly and the crowd was treated to more than one new song (a pleasant surprise as we weren’t sure how they were going to fill a whole set with the few songs we recognise as being theirs). We particularly enjoyed Let It Go – another anthemic track which had us singing along before the first chorus was out. They even threw in a bit of Aladdin(!) at the beginning and end of their set for good measure.
Their progress is clear and it’s inevitable that their popularity will continue to grow and they’ll see more success in the future. That being said, we didn’t enjoy this gig as much as the previous two times we have seen them – we’d like to hear more material from them next time; something they will need to consider as they go on to do more and more headline shows.
We wish the boys the best of luck and recommend you check them out when they are next playing near you. Their headline tour is drawing to a close now but we’re sure they’ll be back on the road soon!
