Dingwalls, London (4th February 2015)
Who are 2:54?
Described as an alternative rock band, 2:54 are fronted by Irish sisters, Colette and Hannah, accompanied by bass guitarist Rich and drummer Alex.
Almost toying with being pop at times, the guitar bass and drum beats keep the band grounded by a darker sound, with hints of Garbage and The XX dropped in for good measure.
Where can I see them play?
You’ve missed them in London (if that’s where you’re reading from) – that’s where we saw them last night, at Camden’s Dingwalls.
They’re off to the States next, kicking off in Brooklyn on the 27th February. For more dates, check out their Live page.
What are they like live?
Good. Definitely good. It was difficult to judge all aspects of their performance (the venue was too dark so you could hardly see the band, the acoustics were mixed depending on where you were, the vocals were overpowered by the music) but if you asked would we see them again then the answer would be yes (preferably in a different venue).
We really enjoyed the music itself and could almost have gone without the vocals. The band had plenty of energy and you can never go wrong with bass guitars that look almost like they have a life of their own!
What if I don’t live in the States?
You’ll have to make do with their recorded material which sounds surprisingly different to how they sounded last night, particularly when you can actually hear the vocals!
You have two albums to choose from: their first, 2:54, followed by The Other I. Early singles, On a Wire and Scarlet, were released in 2011 and feature on their SoundCloud page. Their latest single, Blindfold, is a particularly catchy listen.
What else should I know?
The sisters used to be part of the band The Vulgarians – we think we prefer their current band name…
