The Magician presents Magic Tape 50

Ace Hotel, London (23rd February 2015)

We’ve done quite well not to write solely about The Magician since we started the blog. We did say that he would become a familiar name to you when we got started but sadly we have not seen much of him in London recently so we haven’t been able to rave about him as much as we would like.

The Magician_Ace HotelThat all changed last night when we were given the very special opportunity to be at the recording of Magic Tape 50 for MixmagTV. What you may ask is Magic Tape 50? Well, the Magic Tape series has been a selection of mixtapes that The Magician has recorded and made available for download through SoundCloud (until SoundCloud changed the rules, but it’s still possible to download via Mega).

Last night was quite the milestone as we reached Magic Tape 50!

Our date with DISCO

DJs, Music

Skream, Dimitri from Paris, Horse Meat Disco and HomoElectric

Skream residency, XOYO, London (14th February 2015)

This Saturday, while all the couples were out canoodling and doing other such couple-related things, we were doing the only thing appropriate for Valentine’s Day – we were dancing the night away to the infectious sounds of disco as Skream was joined in the main room by two of the biggest names of the genre: Horse Meat Disco and Dimitri from Paris.

Here are our top tracks from the night (many of which I’m sure will be familiar to many of you)…

OK Go

KOKO, London (13th February 2015)
With support from Oscar and the Wolf

How did I not know about OK Go sooner?

That’s a good question; the boys (Damian Kulash, Tim Nordwind, Andy Ross and Dan Konopka) have been together for the last 17 years! Sometimes though a good thing goes unnoticed until you stumble across it unaware.

So what did you find?

Formed in Midwest America (Chicago to be precise), the boys have experimented with various sounds throughout their career but are largely described as an alternative rock band – something which is evident when you consider they have toured with the likes of Kaiser Chiefs to the Music to Panic! At The Disco in the past.

Prides: These are the seeds you sow

Prides

Heaven, London (12th February 2015)
With support from Model Aeroplanes

This last week has seen us discover two great new acts (Model Aeroplanes and Oscar and the Wolf) as they performed as support for two of the headliners we originally went to see. Prides were an act we discovered in the same way; supporting Foxes at KOKO back in May 2014.

Hailing from Glasgow, the trio are fairly new to the scene having only formed in 2013. The boys have quickly built their own following and have since featured on the likes of Radio 1’s Playlist and even Made In Chelsea‘s music list (Seeds You Sow featured on Series 6, Episode 11 – make of that as you will…) As a result, they were easily able to fill Heaven’s 1,800 capacity on Thursday evening.

2:54

Dingwalls, London (4th February 2015)

Who are 2:54?

Described as an alternative rock band, 2:54 are fronted by Irish sisters, Colette and Hannah, accompanied by bass guitarist Rich and drummer Alex.

Almost toying with being pop at times, the guitar bass and drum beats keep the band grounded by a darker sound, with hints of Garbage and The XX dropped in for good measure.

Where can I see them play?

TwoFiftyFour_DingwallsYou’ve missed them in London (if that’s where you’re reading from) – that’s where we saw them last night, at Camden’s Dingwalls.

They’re off to the States next, kicking off in Brooklyn on the 27th February. For more dates, check out their Live page.

The Kooks can’t escape us, even if we have to fly to another country to see them…

The Kooks

Heineken Music Hall, Amsterdam (31st January 2015)

You know what makes us grumpy? Not getting tickets to a gig we want to see. You know what makes us even more grumpy?! A band or artist we want to see not coming to London as part of their tour. Now that may sound a bit spoilt (and we are – we’re usually spoilt for choice!), but we like to be able to take in all those events we want to without having to worry about complications. The Kooks were kindly the most recent band to challenge us but, fear not, we simply made a short trip to Amsterdam to make sure we saw them in person as they showcased their most recent comeback.

Having not been a huge fan of Listen when it was released last year, we were only cautiously optimistic that this was going to be a sound decision… We’re glad we made the effort though – putting on an adept show, complemented by one of the best stage sets we’ve seen in a while, along with wholesome acoustics in a great venue, the boys had us fully tuned in from the get-go.
